Under the direction of School of Business Associate Faculty Mary-Anne Neal, 20,000 civil servants in the Mongolian government were trained in policies that reflect the trend toward greater community involvement. The MERIT project (Mongolia Enhancing Resource Management through Institutional Transformation) is now in the implementation phase.

Neal was invited to develop and facilitate the MERIT project (Mongolia Enhancing Resource Management through Institutional Transformation), which is currently underway, based on 21st century principles of teaching and learning. Training is delivered online due to COVID-19.

MERIT, a six-year project headquartered in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar, is a joint project with Global Affairs Canada, CESO (Canadian Executive Services Organization) and other NGOs to promote sustainable social and economic development in Mongolia. This initiative aligns with Neal’s ongoing work to build capacity in remote northern Indigenous communities.

The Dene of the Sahtu came together to write their Dene Hero stories, publishing four books in four years. Written by community members aged 10 to 82, the books honour the Dene culture, history and philosophy.

Volume 4 Book Launch:

Guided by School of Business Associate Faculty Mary-Anne Neal, the Dene of the Sahtu have published Volume 4 in the Dene Hero series of collaborative books. Written by the Dene, about the Dene and for the Dene, these books chronicle their history and celebrate their home-grown role models.

Joyful book celebrations in Colville Lake and Deline were filmed by Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) for five 45-minute videos that will be aired on national television in the coming months.

Echoing the words of their ancestors, these collaborative books honour the Dene spirit, build transferable skills and improve literacy.

Faculty Mary-Anne Neal was featured on APTN and Cabin Radio after the publication of its fourth volume. The project, funded by the Arctic Inspiration Prize, was designed to improve literacy and promote pride in the five Sahtu communities in the vicinity of Great Bear Lake.

President of Ayoni Keh Land Corporation David Codzi said a lack of stories about Sahtu residents' contributions to exploration, science and innovation was the impetus behind the Dene Heroes publishing project.

The books have become an intergenerational project, Neal said, with contributors aged 10 to 80. Some stories from young people describe heroes in their lives, some are tributes to family members, and others are memories from residential school survivors.

Mary-Anne Neal, RRU School of Business associate faculty member, is the project director of an Indigenous-led social innovation project. The Dene Hero book series was awarded the prestigious Arctic Inspiration Prize in 2018. With the $100,000 prize money, Neal has trained Indigenous youth in the remote Sahtu region of the NWT in the skills and knowledge they need to take responsibility for annually publishing a collaborative book about Dene heroes.

Volume 3 of the Dene Hero series is now well underway, and community celebrations are planned for the Sahtu in mid-January, 2019.

More than 150 Sahtu beneficiaries have already contributed to this collaborative project. 1100 books have been distributed in the Sahtu.
